Industrial Dedusting

Explosion Protection & Prevention of Dust Explosions

Explosion protection and the prevention of dust explosions are critical issues in many industrial sectors. Fine particles in the air can, under certain conditions, form an explosive mixture that, when ignited, can lead to devastating explosions. Industries particularly at risk include those where explosive dusts are released in high concentrations, such as the sugar industry, tire manufacturing, food production, and the production of pet food and compound feed. Implementing appropriate explosion protection measures is not only essential for safeguarding people and machinery but is also a legal requirement.

Dust Exposions in Industry

Dust explosions are highly relevant in the industry as they can lead to severe accidents with far-reaching consequences. Implementing suitable dedusting systems is the first step in effectively preventing dust explosions. However, the dedusting process itself carries a significant explosion risk and requires special explosion protection measures. To effectively and compliantly mitigate the risk of dust explosions, it is essential to understand the causes of dust explosions and the associated legal requirements.

  • Formation of dust explosions

For a dust explosion to occur, three conditions must be met simultaneously:

    1. Combustible Dust: The material must be inherently combustible and dispersed in the air with sufficient fineness. Typical combustible materials include organic dusts like sugar, grain, or tobacco.
    2. Oxygen: There must be an adequate supply of oxygen, usually the oxygen present in the air is sufficient.
    3. Ignition Source: There must be an ignition source capable of igniting the dust cloud. Ignition sources include open flames, hot surfaces, sparks, electrostatic discharges, or mechanical friction.

Additionally, the dust concentration must meet specific criteria, exceeding a lower explosion limit (LEL) and staying below an upper explosion limit (UEL). These are material-specific values.

When all these conditions are present, a dust explosion—an extremely dangerous event—can occur. A dust explosion spreads within seconds and has the potential to cause significant harm to both people and machinery.

  • Legal regulations for explosion protection in the EU (ATEX Directive)

Explosion protection measures must comply with strict legal requirements and standards to ensure safety in workplaces. The ATEX Directive (ATmosphères EXplosibles) is an EU-wide regulation that governs the safe operation of equipment and protective systems in explosive atmospheres. It consists of two parts:

    • ATEX 114 (Directive 2014/34/EU): This part regulates the requirements for products used in explosive atmospheres. Manufacturers must ensure that their products meet specific safety standards in order to obtain CE marking. This particularly concerns electrical and mechanical equipment, as well as protective systems.

    • ATEX 153 (Directive 1999/92/EC): This part focuses on occupational safety in explosive atmospheres. Employers are required to take measures to protect their employees from explosion hazards. This includes assessing explosion risks, classifying hazardous zones, and implementing appropriate safety measures.

The aim of the ATEX Directive is to minimize risks in explosive environments and ensure the safety of people and property through effective explosion protection.

  • Advantages of effective explosion protection
    • Operational safety: Ensuring the continuity of production operations by preventing unexpected production interruptions and long-term shutdowns due to explosions and fires. Maintaining delivery capability.

    • Legal compliance: Adherence to national and international safety standards and legal regulations for explosion protection. Avoidance of legal consequences and fines due to non-compliance.

    • Employee safety: Creating a safe working environment by minimizing fire and explosion risks. Preventing injuries and fatalities caused by shockwaves, burns, and flying debris. Protecting the company's reputation.

    • Cost-effectiveness: One-time investments in equipment and machinery protection to prevent future unexpected financial burdens from repairs, replacements, and special investments. Increasing operational efficiency and ensuring long-term economic success.

Our Solutions

for explosion protection in dust extraction systems

Riedel Filtertechnik offers customized solutions for explosion and fire protection in dust collection systems, distinguished by the highest levels of reliability and safety. We rely on a combination of preventive measures to avoid explosions, as well as additional measures to contain any occurring explosions and fires. The hazard-oriented and risk-appropriate implementation of measures in the design of our dust control systems according to your requirements is a given.

Avoidance of ignition sources

Preventive explosion protection through the use of electronic components in accordance with ATEX zone classification. Use of antistatic filter materials in the filter unit. Ensuring the entire extraction system is grounded and providing lightning protection for outdoor installations.

Explosion Pressure Relief

Equipping extraction systems with technical devices for pressure relief, such as rupture discs, to safely release overpressure in the event of an explosion. When necessary, implementing technical solutions to prevent the escape of flames (flameless explosion pressure relief).

Explosion Suppression

Early detection of sparks using detectors that trigger the rapid release of extinguishing agents, such as CO2 bottles. This suppresses dangerous pressure buildup and prevents the spread of an explosion.

Explosion-Proof Construction

Structural measures for the extraction system, such as reinforced steel structures and filter housings, designed to withstand the extreme forces of an explosion. Explosion-proof construction to protect the surrounding area, and explosion shock-resistant construction to protect the extraction system itself.

Fire Protection Measures

Integration of fire detection systems for early fire detection and initiation of extinguishing measures. Additionally, implementation of fire barriers in pipelines using fire protection dampers.

System Decoupling

Utilization of technical solutions such as check valves, explosion protection valves, and rotary valves to decouple systems or system components in the event of an explosion. This prevents secondary explosions caused by backflowing flames in pipelines and the production environment.

Smart Automation

Implementation of intelligent explosion protection measures through customized automation. For example, automatic shutdown of systems when defined thresholds are reached to prevent explosive conditions.

Modernization & Upgrade

For existing systems, we assist you in developing measures to enhance explosion and fire protection retroactively. Together, we will create and implement a concept tailored to your needs.

Learn more about how we can support you with optimization and upgrades.

Maintenance and Servicing

To ensure maximum explosion protection, regular maintenance of your systems is essential. Both mechanical and electronic components for explosion and fire protection require technical inspections to guarantee smooth operation in the event of a malfunction.
