COPLAS clean Plasma Technology
COPLAS clean is our cold plasma technology for air cleaning. Odours are eradicated without any chemicals, water or waste. Our patented plasma reactors produce reactive oxygen and OH radicals, which are then injected into the exhaust air. The ingenious result is that odour molecules are oxidized in just milliseconds by non-thermal plasma technology. The plasma air purification occurs without direct contact with the system.
Functionality & Application
Use of COPLAS clean Plasma Technology for Air Cleaning
The COPLAS clean plasma technology by Riedel Filtertechnik operates based on patented plasma reactors, which are used to generate reactive oxygen and OH radicals. These radicals are then directly injected into the exhaust air, where they oxidize existing odour molecules within milliseconds. Watch the following video to see how COPLAS clean is used for plasma air purification in the industry:
Applicability Test with Riedel On-site Customizing
Each production environment has its own characteristics, and the odour load in the exhaust air can vary not only between plants but also across different production cycles.
To ensure the effectiveness of plasma air purification using COPLAS clean, as well as the optimal design of the system, we conduct an on-site customizing session with you. The requirements for this process are minimal. We only need access to outdoor air, a sampling point in the exhaust air duct, and a power connection.

- What is cold plasma?
Plasma refers to gases that contain freely moving charges and are thus electrically conductive. This so-called fourth state of matter occurs when energy is deliberately supplied to gases, causing some electrons to escape from the atomic shells. This results in the formation of positively charged ions and free electrons.
In contrast to thermal plasmas (like the sun), where gas particles and electron gas share the same (very high) temperature, the neutral gas molecules in cold plasmas are essentially at room temperature, while the hot electron component, which can reach temperatures of several tens of thousands of degrees Kelvin, is ideal for generating highly reactive radicals.
- How are Odours Treated Using Cold Plasma Technology?
Ambient air enters the plasma reactor cylinders (PRCs), where highly reactive oxygen and OH radicals are generated. These radicals are then injected into the exhaust air stream, where they cause the rapid oxidation of odour molecules. Subsequent catalysts are not required, as unreacted radicals spontaneously decay into oxygen and water molecules.
- Does the plasma air purification using COPLAS clean also work in my industry
Cold plasma for industrial odour reduction is widely applicable, as demonstrated by successful installations in various industries. Thanks to our on-site customizing with a small mobile unit, the applicability and efficiency of cold plasma odour reduction can be determined on-site in any industry and under prevailing specific process conditions.
- What Factors Influence the Success of Plasma Air Purification?
A particular odour usually arises from a combination of dozens or even hundreds of different chemical compounds. Therefore, the individual efficiency of odour reduction depends on the specific composition of the exhaust air. Process conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and dust content, also affect the efficiency of exhaust air treatment. Cold plasma is particularly well-suited for air purification in industries where the exhaust air is characterized by high odour concentrations, organic oduor components (proteins and fats), high relative humidity, and large air volumes.
- What Byproducts Are Generated in Industrial Plasma Air Purification?
None! Cold plasma is the only technology for industrial odour reduction that operates entirely without the use of water, chemicals, biomass, fossil fuels, activated carbon, or other materials. Therefore, odour reduction using cold plasma technology is particularly resource-efficient and contributes to sustainable production.
- Is Cold Plasma Dangerous?
No! However, care should be taken when selecting a cold plasma system: the generation of a cold plasma discharge involves the use of high-voltage electronics. The patented COPLAS clean plasma technology by Riedel Filtertechnik is the only solution on the market that includes an integrated control cabinet. Additionally, the system operates at low voltage. High voltage is only present in the plasma reactor cylinders (PRCs) and is therefore contained within the PRC casing. There is no risk of coming into contact with high voltage - neither inside nor outside the system. Thus, the highest level of safety is ensured for the user.
- Can COPLAS clean be Easily Integrated into the Production Process?
Absolutely! Easy installation into the existing process infrastructure is ensured: thanks to the injection principle, there is no disruption to the production exhaust air flow and, importantly, no pressure loss. As it is a stand-alone system with an integrated control cabinet, installation on the roof is also possible. Additionally, it follows a "plug-and-play" principle, as the COPLAS clean air purification system is pre-assembled in-house.
- How Does the COPLAS clean Plasma Technology Respond to Fluctuating Exhaust Air Flows?
During operation, the plasma output can be adjusted in 1% increments, allowing the system to optimally adapt to production fluctuations. The modular system design enables the treatment of exhaust air flows ranging from 500 to 200,000 m³/h. This also allows for future expansion of the system in case of a permanent increase in exhaust air flows.
- How Demanding is the Maintenance of a COPLAS clean System?
Only the replacement of the plasma reactor cyclinders (PRCs) is required after 8,000 operating hours or two years. This ensures a predictable replacement schedule and manageable costs for industrial plasma air purification. Through a circulation model and the refurbishment of used PRCs by Riedel Filtertechnik, resources are optimally conserved. Additionally, if needed, pre-filters may be replaced depending on the characteristics of the ambient air. Thanks to the injection principle, all maintenance can be performed "online," without requiring a production shutdown.
