Industrial exhaust air purification is a crucial component of modern production processes. Efficient exhaust air purification systems are essential for complying with environmental regulations, ensuring air quality both inside and outside production facilities, and assessing and minimizing explosion and health risks. In doing so, industrial exhaust air purification systems face a variety of challenges. Different production processes generate various types of air pollutants, which require specific purification methods. Dust, material residues, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and unpleasant odours must be efficiently removed to meet the ever-increasing requirements:

Compliance with legal regulations

Regulations for compliance with clean gas dust levels, odour emissions, and pollutant concentrations are becoming increasingly stringent worldwide. In certain industries, such as the food industry, additional health requirements for exhaust air purification are added.

Energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness

  • Legal Regulations for Emission Compliance

    In Germany, the regulations for emission compliance of permitted facilities are governed by the revised Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (Technische Anleitung zur Reinhaltung der Luft: TA Luft) from 2021. The TA Luft is a central regulatory framework that contains official guidelines for reducing emissions and imissions of air pollutants, such as dust, odours, and (organic and inorganic) compounds.

    These requirements are intended to prevent harmful environmental impacts and illustrate the state of the art, which must be adhered to as mandated by the Federal Immission Control Act (Bundes-Immissionsschutzgesetz: BImSchG). Therefore, the TA Luft also serves as the basis for the approval of technical installations. Through the BImSchG, the German legislator implements the EU Directive 2010/75/EU on industrial emissions, specifically regulating requirements for effective industrial air pollution control.

    The TA Luft is also regularly used as a benchmark and interpretation aid for evaluating facility emissions in other German-speaking and European countries, thus serving as a foundation for designing industrial air pollution control systems.

  • Legal Regulations for Workplace Safety

    In Germany, regulations concerning dust and odour concentrations in the workplace are governed by the Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances (Technischen Regeln für Gefahrstoffe: TRGS) and the Hazardous Substances Ordinance (Gefahrstoffverordnung: GefStoffV). TRGS 900 specifies Workplace Exposure Limits (Arbeitsplatzgrenzwerte: AGW) for dust, such as 10 mg/m³ for inhalable dust in the work environment. These limits are designed to protect workers' health and are based on the current state of technology.

    The GefStoffV mandates compliance with these limits and requires employers to conduct risk assessments and implement protective measures, such as using effective air treatment systems. Regular measurements and documentation of dust concentrations are mandatory. The TRGS detail the requirements of the GefStoffV and support the implementation of the Federal Immission Control Act, which provides the legal framework for workplace health protection.

    While there are no specific workplace limits for odors, they must still be considered as indicators of potentially harmful chemical substances in industrial air treatment. The GefStoffV and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Arbeitsschutzgesetz: ArbSchG) require comprehensive risk assessments that may include odor concentrations.

The operation of an exhaust air treatment system varies depending on the technology used. For example, fabric filters use physical barriers for dust filtration, while activated carbon filters use adsorption to remove odours and VOCs. Other separators used in industrial exhaust air treatment, such as cyclones and spin separators, utilize the mass force of larger particles. Gas scrubbers, on the other hand, remove both dust and pollutants from the exhaust air through the use of wash liquids and chemicals. In addition to these traditional methods, the importance of innovative technologies, such as Riedel's patented cold plasma technology for odour reduction, is continually increasing.

Proven Technologies for Dust Extraction

In large production facilities, a central dust collection solution is recommended, which handles all functions of dust management. This includes the extraction of process air from various emission points, the consolidation of dust-laden raw gases, the actual dust separation, and the subsequent discharge of dust. The following extraction and separation technologies are used in Riedel Filtertechnik's customized dust collection systems, either independently or in combination, depending on the specific application.

Innovative technologies for odour control

When cleaning process exhaust air for odours, special attention is given to the composition of the exhaust stream and the actual source of the odour. Depending on whether the odour is caused by (an)organic substances, VOCs, or other chemical compounds, the most effective air purification technology should be chosen. Riedel Filtertechnik relies on the patented COPLAS clean cold plasma technology, which can be supplemented situationally by activated carbon filters or scrubbers for selected applications.

  • Cold Plasma lasma Technology

    Our advanced COPLAS clean technology generates cold plasma to decompose and eliminate odours from process exhaust air. Odour molecules are oxidized within milliseconds by the non-thermal plasma technology.

  • Activated Charcoal Filter

    Based on adsorption, activated carbon filters capture odour-intensive and health-threatening substances from the exhaust air, thereby reducing odour and pollutant levels.

  • Absorption Scrubber

    Process exhaust air is passed in co-current or counter-current through a wash liquid, which absorbs and neutralizes the pollutants through chemical absorption.
